Typed Letter Signed: "Herbert Hoover", 1 page, 7¼x10½. Stanford University, Stanford, California, 1955 August 24. To Robert A. Cotner, Crescent City, California, thanking him for birthday wishes, concluding: "I was glad to have that glimpse of you at Newberg." Hoover had celebrated his 81st birthday on August 10th. When Hoover was only six years old, his 34-year-old father died of typhoid fever and when he was nine, in 1884, his mother died of pneumonia at the age of 35. After their mother's death, nine-year-old Herbert, his 12-year-old brother Theodore and seven-year-old sister May moved to Newberg, Oregon, to live with their mother's brother, Henry John Minthorn, a country doctor who had a strong interest in education. In Newberg, Hoover worked on a farm, and he attended a Quaker academy that his uncle helped direct. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
