enclose the set-up of the Combined Metals Company (not present). We have
arraigned that you should be Vice President (if you want it) and there will be
some salary. It will not interfere with your other occupations. I am purchasing
7,000 shares of Class A stock for $2.50 a share and 1800 Common for 10 cents a
share. To keep faith I must retain some considerable interest in both of these
for myself as well as divide part over you, Allan, and Herbert. I have agreed
both stocks will be tied up in the name of nominee (I have designated Allan)
until all parties are in full agreement as to any sales. So it must be looked on
as a long-time investment. I have thought of assigning a participation of 800
Class A and 200 Common to you;* if you would like to have it, send your check
for $2020 to Allan when convenien (sic), and he will write you a letter
stating that he holds it for your account but to be retained in his name until
sale is approved by me or him. Sincerely," In his own handwriting at bottom
margin in pencil: "I am assigning the same participation to each Herbert
& Allan-" Herbert Clark Hoover (1874-1964) served as the 31st U.S.
