HERBERT HOOVER
Four days after his election as President, Hoover thanks a well-wisher.
Typed Letter Sigend: "Herbert Hoover" as President-elect, 1p, 7¼x8½. Stanford University, California, 1928 November 10. To Master Corter Cordner, Pasadena. In full: "I have your very touching letter this morning. I deeply appreciate your kind thought in sending it to me, and I wish to thank you for it." On November 6, 1928, Hoover had defeated Democrat Alfred E. Smith, 444-87 electoral votes. Herbert Clark Hoover (1874-1964), the first President born west of the Mississippi River, served as 31st President of the U.S. from 1929-1933. The stock market had crashed on October 29, 1929, resulting in the Great Depression, but the economy had begun to improve somewhat in 1930. On November 4, 1930, however, the Republicans lost eight seats in the U.S. Senate, barely holding on to a 48-47 lead. For the first time since 1916, the Democrats took control of the House, 220-214. Prior to taking office, Hoover had been Secretary of Commerce (1921-1928) under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Hoover lived longer after his term of office than any other U.S. President: 31 years and 231 days. Lightly creased, lightly stained just touching signature.
