Typed Letter Signed: "Herbert Hoover", 1 page, 8½x11. Sacramento, Calif., 1920 August (no day). To John S. Craig, Esq., Sacramento. In full: "I hereby release and discharge you from all liability of every kind and character on account of that certain promissory note dated the 24th day of December 1919, executed by Sacramento Publishing Company, a corporation, in my favor, in the principal sum of $5,000, and...with the consent of Mr. Ben S. Allen, erased your name from said promissory note, either as an endorser or a joint maker. Very truly yours," Newsman BEN S. ALLEN of the "Sacramento Union" had been one of the representatives of the Associated Press in London during World War I. He concentrated on the Belgian cause, and for over two years his almost daily dispatches in the American press rendered invaluable service to Belgium. From 1915-1918, HERBERT HOOVER was chairman of the Commission for Relief in Belgium and in 1920, was chairman of the European Relief Council. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches "H" in Hoover. Stains in blank areas, staple holes at upper margin.
