Hoover signs a White House Card
Signature: "Herbert Hoover", 4¼x2¾ on imprinted "THE WHITE HOUSE/WASHINGTON" card. Herbert Hoover took his oath of office as 31st U.S. President on Monday, March 4, 1929 on the East Portico of the Capitol building, pictured on this engraving. On November 6, 1928 Hoover, a Republican who had served as Secretary of Commerce under Harding and Coolidge (1921-1928), defeated Democrat Alfred E. Smith, Governor of New York (1919-1920, 1923-1928), by 21,392,190-15,016,443 popular votes, 444-87 electoral votes and 40-eight states. During his term of office, the Great Depression paralyzed the nation, and in the elections of 1930, Democrats won control of the House of Representatives and the Republicans had only a one-vote majority in the Senate. Lightly soiled at lower blank margin. Fine condition.
