ALS: "J.A. Garfield", 1p, 5x8. Mentor, Ohio, no year, June 25. To R.H. Newton, M.B.H. Newton, Durand, Wis. In full: "Your kind letter of the 9th was duly recd. I can only find time to thank you for its knd words of good cheer." Although no year is indicated, this was penned in 1880. On June 8, 1880, at the Republican National Convention held at Exposition Hall in Chicago, Ohio Congressman James A. Garfield received his party's nomination for President on the 36th ballot with 399 delegate votes (378 votes were needed for nomination). Former President U.S. Grant, seeking an unprecedented third term, was second with 306 votes. Newton wrote his letter on June 9th, a day after Garfield was nominated. Horizontal fold "underlines" signature, pinhead-size stain just touches top of the "f" in Garfield. Overall, fine condition.
