JAMES A. GARFIELD
The Congressman puts his early carpenter training to good use at his home in Mentor.
ALS: "J.A Garfield", 1p, 7x8½. Mentor, Ohio, 1877 October 10. To H.S. Hubbell. In full: "I find I did not order enough lumber for my repairs here-Please send me immediately 8 pieces 2x4 12 ft/16 [pieces 2x4] 16 ft/6 [pieces] 4x4 14 ft/800 ft common inch/400 [ft] fencing 16 ft. Send to Mentor." Garfield was already a Congressman when he wrote this letter. He was about to leave for Washington as the 45th Congress was to begin its first session on October 15, five days after this letter. He was only 18 months old when his 33-year-old father died, leaving his mother a widow with four children. The family lived in a log cabin in Otsego County, Ohio. By the age of 14, Garfield was an excellent student and excelled at manual labor. During the winter of 1849-1850, he attended the Geauga seminary at Chester, Ohio, about ten miles from his home. During vacations, he learned and practiced the trade of carpentry, helped at harvest, taught and took other employment to get money to pay for his schooling. Stained in areas. Some touch parts of the signature. Folds, one vertical runs between the "A.G." Lightly soiled. Irregular left and lower edges. 1/16-inch vertical tear at lower left corner.
