JAMES A. GARFIELD
Congressman Garfield asks Grant's Postmaster General if the Post Office Department is paying too much rent for a building.
Autograph Telegram signed: "J.A. Garfield" as Ohio Congressman, 1p, 8½x5½. House of Representatives, U.S., 1874 or 1875 December 18. To Hon. Marshall Jewell, P.M. Genl. In full: "How large is the building in E St. rented by your dept and do you think the rental is too high. It was debated & doubted in the House yesterday. Please answer soon." On printed form headed: "Departmental Telegraph Lines,/(Connecting the House of Representatives with all the Executive Departments and the Government Printing Office.)". Garfield represented Ohio in Congress from 1863 until November 8, 1880, when he resigned, having been elected President on November 2nd. In Congress he served as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee and was a member of the Banking and Currency, Ways and Means and Military Affairs Committees. The subject of this telegram probably fell into one of his committees' responsibilities. MARSHALL JEWELL served as Grant's Postmaster General from August 24, 1874 until July 11, 1876, so this telegram was penned in 1874 or 1875. Erased pencil notes at upper left blank corner. Fine condition.
