On his Congressional account: "Sergeant-at-Arms U.S. House of Representatives". In full: "Pay to myself, or Bearer, Five Hundred & Eighty Nine 62/100 Dollars, and charge to my account". Not endorsed. Garfield had been elected as a Republican to Congress on November 4, 1862, but chose to remain in the Army. He was commissioned Major General on September 19, 1863, but resigned 11 weeks later, on December 5, 1863, taking his seat in Congress. Chipped at lower left corner, tear and fold at blank right edge, tape on verso shows through to the "lf" of "myself". "J" of signature light. Overall, fine condition.
