Partly Printed Check filled out and signed: "J.A. Garfield" as Congressman, 8x3¼. Washington, 1873 December 31. Printed "Sergeant-at-Arms U.S. House of Representatives". Payable to: "myself, Draft or Bearer, Three Hundred & Twelve 50/100 Dollars, and charge to my account". "X" cut cancellation, not near signature. Light rust stain at upper blank margin, else fine condition. Accompanied by unsigned engraving, 6x8 overall, image 2¼x2¾ (one surface). Printed at bottom: "Bureau of Engraving and Printing". Light 2-inch vertical stain below image, else fine condition. In his seventeen years in Congress (1863-1881), Garfield was known as one of the finest orators of his day. During Grant's administration, he chaired such important committees as Military Affairs, Banking and Currency, and Appropriations. In 1877, he was a member of the Electoral Commission that decided the disputed Hayes-Tilden election. Garfield served as Minority Leader of the Republican Party during Hayes' administration.
