In part: "I recently called on the P.M. General in regard to vacancies in the Postal Service in our District and found that there are none existing and no immediate prospect of any. It was intended by the Department to put a line of Postal Cars on the Erie Route and that may yet be done...I should be glad to assist your friend Mr. Reese but I know of no place that can be had for him, at least at present...." Evidently, Garfield signed the letter before his secretary finished writing it as the last two lines had to be squeezed in above his signature. Creased. ½-inch separations at blank left margin at horizontal folds, ½-inch separation at blank right margin at lower horizontal fold, 1-inch separation at upper horizontal fold. Shaded at edges. Soiled at blank folds on verso.
