James Buchanan autographs and signs a handwritten letter as President to Henry Gilpin,
who had been Van Buren's Attorney General.
Autograph Letter Signed: "James Buchanan" as President, 1 page, 6¼x8. Washington, 1858
January 25. To Hon. Henry D. Gilpin. In full: "I return you Mr. Reed's letter with many
thanks. I have read it with much interest. With my kindest regards to Mrs Gilpin, I remain, very
respectfully." Born in Lancaster, England in 1801, Gilpin was graduated from the
University of Pennsylvania in 1819. At 31 he became U.S. Attorney for Pennsylvania.
From January 11, 1840 to March 3, 1841 Gilpin was Van Buren's Attorney General. It was
probably at this time that Gilpin first became acquainted with fellow Pennsylvanian, then
Senator James Buchanan. Mounting remnants at top verso with show-through. Light
rectangular tanning at perimeter of text from prior framing. Folds, else fine condition.
