JAMES BUCHANAN
In 1852, seven weeks after the Democratic National Convention, he signed this handwritten reply to an autograph request.
ALS: "James Buchanan", 1 page, 7½x9¾. Wheatland, near Lancaster, 1852 July 26. To A.A. Mayer Esquire. On blue paper. In full: "In compliance with your request, I send you my autograph. With many thanks for the kind expressions contained in your letter." Buchanan had served in the House of Representatives (1821-1831), as U.S. Minister to Russia (1832-1833), in the U.S. Senate (1834-1845), as Polk's Secretary of State (1845-1849) and as U.S. Minister to Great Britain (1853-1856). His name was placed in nomination for President at the Democratic National Conventions in 1844, 1848 and 1852. This letter was penned seven weeks after Buchanan lost the 1852 nomination to Franklin Pierce. In 1856, Buchanan accomplished a political feat never achieved before or since: denying an incumbent elected President renomination. President Pierce's name was placed in nomination at the Democratic Convention and he received 122½ votes on the first ballot, second to Buchanan's 135½. On the 17th ballot, Buchanan was unanimously nominated. Folds, vertical fold touches the "s" in James. Fine condition.
