JAMES BUCHANAN
The President signs an autograph note to Treasury Secretary Howell Cobb.
Autograph Note Signed: "J.B." as 15th U.S. President, 1 page, 4x2¾. (Washington), 1859 May 18. In full: "Referred to the particular attention of the Secretary of the Treasury". This note was cut from an integral sheet bearing a letter to Buchanan, who believed that it was a matter best handled by his Secretary of the Treasury. HOWELL COBB served as Buchanan's Secretary of the Treasury from March 6, 1857 to December 10, 1860, when he resigned, saying that the state of Georgia, then about to secede, required his services. Cobb became a Major General in the Confederate Army. Glue stains at verso's margins lightly show through. Lightly soiled.
