JAMES BUCHANAN. ADS: "James Buchanan", 2p, front and verso, 7¾x5. Lancaster, 1825 November 12. Buchanan acknowledges he has "received from the Hon. John B. Gibson full satisfaction for the amount due upon the annexed Mortgage from him to me. I therefore hereby constitute & appoint John D. Mahon Esquire of Carlisle my lawful attorney for me & in my name to enter satisfaction...." Also signed: "Willet C. Ogilley" and "D. Moore" as witnesses. On verso, Buchanan has penned an ADS: "James Buchanan" in text, for the signature of "D. Moore", certifying that Buchanan personally appeared before him. In part: "Personally appeared before me the subscriber an alderman for the City of Lancaster James Buchanan & acknowledged the within power of attorney to John D. Mahon Esquire...." Buchanan represented Pennsylvania in the House of Representatives from 1821-1831, later serving as Minister to Russia (1832-1834), U.S. Senator (1834-1845), Polk's Secretary of State (1845-1849), Minister to Great Britain (1853-1856) and President of the United States (1857-1861). Partial paper loss at upper right edge and corner. Folds, horizontal fold shows partial separation. Inexpertly repaired with tape in blank area of verso, touches 2 words of text on front. Lightly creased, lightly soiled. Light ink show through.
