JAMES BUCHANAN
As Secretary of State, he asks Navy Secretary Mason to place to place ads in a Lancaster, Pennsylvania newspaper because its publisher "is a sound and consistent Democrat".
Manuscript Letter Signed: "James Buchanan" as Polk's Secretary of State, 1p, 8x10. Washington, 1848 April 27. To Secretary of the Navy John Y. Mason. Secretary of State Buchanan would be "much gratified" if Secretary of the Navy Mason would arrange for the Navy Department to place advertisements in his neighbor Edwin M. Hutter's "Lancaster Intelligence", a political journal, mentioning to him that "Mr. Hutter is a sound and consistent Democrat". Democrat JAMES BUCHANAN represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate from 1834-1845 when he resigned to become Polk's Secretary of State. His home was at Wheatland, near Lancaster. JOHN Y. MASON, who had been Secretary of the Navy at the end of Tyler's administration (1844-1845), served as Polk's Attorney General from 1845-1846 when he became Secretary of the Navy (1846-1849). Throughout the 19th century, rewarding supportive local newspapers with ads and printing jobs was a standard form of political patronage. Folds, light vertical fold touches the "J" in James. Lightly creased. Pencil notes on verso (unknown hand), no show through. Fine condition.
