JAMES BUCHANAN and JOHN B. FLOYD
Newly inaugurated President Buchanan signed this military appointment of a future Union officer, as recommended by outgoing Secretary of War Jefferson Davis and signed by another Secretary of War who would side with the Confederacy.
Partly Printed DS: "James Buchanan" as President and "John B. Floyd" as Secretary of War, 1 page, 15½x19½. On vellum. Washington, 1857 March 5. Just three days earlier, on March 2, 1857, President Pierce had forwarded a letter to the Senate from Secretary of War Jefferson Davis promoting Second Lieutenant George P. Ihrie to be First Lieutenant in the Third Regiment of Artillery. The next day, Pierce's last day as President, the Senate consented to the appointment. On March 5th, the day after his inauguration, President Buchanan signed this document promoting Ihrie. During the Civil War, in 1862, Col. GEORGE P. IHRIE was appointed Aide-de-Camp to Major General John E. Wool and later served on General Grant's staff. JOHN B. FLOYD held his Cabinet position until the autumn of 1860, when he sided with his native state Virginia in seceding from the Union. In 1861, he was accused of using his Cabinet position to divert government troops and arsenals to benefit the South. Floyd demanded a trial, and a special congressional committee fully exonerated him in 1861. Folds, vertical folds touch the "m" in James and "u" in Buchanan. Lightly creased. Partial seal. Overall, fine condition.
