JIMMY CARTER and GERALD R. FORD
Color publicity photograph of Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford with two present and past presidents in the White House.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Kevin/J Carter" and "To Kevin/G. R. Ford". Color, 8x10 overall, image 5x7½ (one surface). In this photograph taken in the White House on October 8, 1981, former Presidents RICHARD NIXON, GERALD R. FORD and JIMMY CARTER posed for photographs with President RONALD REAGAN before the former Presidents left Washington for Egyptian President Sadat's funeral. It was the first time four U.S. Presidents were pictured together and the first time in history that three former U.S. Presidents were called together to officially meet with the current President and go on to formally represent the U.S. On August 9, 1974, GERALD R. FORD (1913-2006) was sworn in as the nation's 38th President following the resignation of Richard Nixon. Ford had previously served as Nixon's Vice President (December 6, 1973-August 9, 1974) following the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew, becoming the only man to have held both of the nation's highest offices without being elected to either. Ford, who was previously a U.S. Congressman from Michigan (1949-1973; Minority Leader, 1965-1973), lost his bid for election to a full four-year term partially as a result of his controversial pardon of his predecessor. Ford, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999, celebrated his 93rd birthday on July 14, 2006. Before his death on December 26, 2006, Ford had surpassed Ronald Reagan (who also lived to age 93) as the longest-lived former U.S. President. JAMES EARL "JIMMY" CARTER (born in 1924) served as 39th U.S. President from 1977-1981. He was the only one-term Democratic President of the 20th century and the first Democrat not to be reelected since Grover Cleveland in 1888. Carter, the only U.S. President to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis (1946, at the age of 21), is also the only U.S. President to serve a full four-year term without making an appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. He won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his diplomatic efforts both during and after his presidency.A month after graduating from the Naval Academy, Carter married Rosalynn Smith. During the next seven years, Carter served aboard battleships and submarines, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. On July 23, 1953, his father, James Earl Carter, Sr., died at the age of 58. Lieutenant Commander Carter resigned from the Navy to rejoin the family peanut farm and warehouse business in Plains. From 1955-1962, he was Chairman of the Sumter County Board of Education. After serving two terms in the Georgia State Senate, Carter ran unsuccessfully for Governor in 1966. Four years later, he ran again and won, serving as Governor of Georgia from 1971-1975. On December 12, 1974, Jimmy Carter announced that he was seeking the 1976 Democratic nomination for President. Fine condition.
