JAMES EARL "JIMMY" CARTER (born in 1924) served as 39th U.S. President from 1977-1981. The only President to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Carter was the only elected President to serve a full term and not make an appointment to the Supreme Court. The previous Governor of Georgia (1971-1975), he lost his bid for re-election to Ronald Reagan in a landslide. Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. On July 7, 1946, 18-year-old ROSALYNN Smith and 21-year-old Ensign Jimmy Carter were married in Plains, Georgia. The Carters have three sons and a daughter. As First Lady, Mrs. Carter continued to support her main causes of mental health, the elderly and the Equal Rights Amendment. Lyndon and LADY BIRD JOHNSON had been married for 39 years and 66 days when he died in 1973. On December 22, 2005, Mrs. Johnson celebrated her 93rd birthday. Among First Ladies, only Bess Truman, who died at 97 in 1982, lived longer. As First Lady, she undertook the Beautification of America Program to clean-up and adorn America's highways and civic areas. Fine condition.
