First Day Cover signed: "Jimmy Carter". First Day Cover honoring America the Beautiful, 18-cent U.S. flag stamp affixed, postmarked Portland, Maine, April 24, 1981, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. James Earl "Jimmy" Carter (born in 1924) served as 39th U.S. President from 1977-1981. He was the only one-term Democratic President of the 20th century and the first Democrat not to be reelected since Grover Cleveland in 1888. Carter, the only U.S. President to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis (1946, at the age of 21), is also the only U.S. President to serve a full four-year term without making an appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. He won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his diplomatic efforts both during and after his presidency.A month after graduating from the Naval Academy, Carter married Rosalynn Smith. During the next seven years, Carter served aboard battleships and submarines, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. On July 23, 1953, his father, James Earl Carter, Sr., died at the age of 58. Lieutenant Commander Carter resigned from the Navy to rejoin the family peanut farm and warehouse business in Plains. From 1955-1962, he was Chairman of the Sumter County Board of Education. After serving two terms in the Georgia State Senate, Carter ran unsuccessfully for Governor in 1966. Four years later, he ran again and won, serving as Governor of Georgia from 1971-1975. On December 12, 1974, Jimmy Carter announced that he was seeking the 1976 Democratic nomination for President. Fine condition.
