JIMMY CARTER
Jimmy Carter signs a typescript from his interview published in the November 1976 issue of "Playboy" magazine.
Typescript signed: "J Carter", 1p, 5¼x7¼. Captioned photograph, b/w, 1¼x2, at right. Excerpt from Carter's interview published in the November 1976 issue of "Playboy" magazine. In part: "The Bible says 'Thou shalt not commit adultery.' Christ said, I tell you that anyone who looks on a woman with lust has in his heart already committed adultery. I've looked on a lot of women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times...." Photograph by Ken Hawkins. Carter's response in "Playboy" was in answer to a question about his religious beliefs -- and almost proved to be his political undoing. At the time he granted this interview to "Playboy" writers Barry Golson and Robert Scheer, Jimmy Carter was running for President against incumbent President Gerald Ford, who had succeeded to the presidency upon the resignation of Richard M. Nixon in August 1974. The "Playboy" interview became an issue in the campaign. In one of his three debates with Ford, Carter apologized to the American people for having granted this "Playboy" interview. Although Carter won the election by 297-240 electoral votes, he believed the margin could have been much greater had he not granted the interview. Fine condition.
