JAMES K. POLK and WILLIAM L. MARCY. Partly Printed DS: "James K. Polk" as 11th U.S. President and "W.L. Marcy" as Secretary of War, 1p, 16x10. Washington, 1848 November 25. On vellum. In full: "Know all whom it may concern, That Private Robert Cowden, of Company (K.) of the 2d Regiment of Dragoons, having Distinguished Himself in the Service of the United States, on the eighteenth day of April, 1847, in the Battle of Cerro Gordo, on the recommendation of Colonel W.S. Harney, the Commanding Officer of his Regiment. I do hereby award to the said Private Robert Cowden, this Certificate of Merit, which, under the provision of the 17th section of the Act, Approved March 3d 1847, entitles him to additional pay at the rate of two dollars per month." On April 18, 1847, in the Battle of Cerro Gordo, Major General David E. Twiggs encountered Mexican General Santa Anna's Army at the hamlet of Cerro Gordo. Colonel WILLIAM S. HARNEY, the ranking cavalry officer in the U.S. Army, led his 2nd Regiment of Dragoons in a daring charge up El Telégrafo, a hill from which General Santa Anna's artillery commanded the surrounding ground. For that act, which was responsible in part for Santa Anna being quickly driven out of Cerro Gordo, he was brevetted Brigadier General. PRIVATE COWDEN, for his service, was awarded this Certificate of Merit and a $2.00 monthly raise in pay. Marcy's signature is light but legible. Slight surface creases. Shaded at areas and at Polk's signature. Rippling to the right of Polk's dark signature. Mounting stains on verso slightly show through, just touching Polk's signature. Overall, fine condition.
