JAMES MADISON
The President writes a check during the rebuilding of the White House, after the British torched it.
Partly Printed Check signed: "James Madison" as fourth U.S. President, 6¼x2½. Washington, 1816 April 16. Drawn on the Bank of Columbia, payable to Robt McKeldan for $23.35. The Bank of Columbia was chartered by the General Assembly of Maryland on December 28, 1793. This District of Columbia's first bank became the city's most influential financial institution. Its stockholders included President George Washington. At the time of this check, President and Mrs. Madison were refugees from the White House which had been torched by the British on August 24, 1814. The Madison's moved to The Octagon, considered the most elegant house of its time in Washington, DC. It was their temporary home during the rebuilding of the White House. The Madison's lost a majority of their personal effects in the fire, and the President personally replaced items with his own funds in order to make The Octagon livable and proper presidential quarters. Also, at the time of this check, extensive demolition of the outer shell of the White House was underway. In late autumn, the timbers on the roof were raised and temporarily shingled over for the winter, allowing the carpenters shelter so that they could work inside. Considering that it had taken nearly ten years to build the first White House, its reconstruction was completed in less than three years. Lightly shaded and stained, not touching signature. Tape repairs on verso support cancellation cuts and do not show through. Torn at left edge.
