JAMES MADISON, JAMES MONROE, and OTHERS
Four men signed these framed papers, including two future Presidents of the United
States
Four Language Ship Papers Signed: “James Madison”, “Jas. Monroe” (as Secretary of State),
“Simon Theus”, and “Wm. Crouch”. Dated July 23, 1811. 21x16. Printed in four languages:
French, Spanish, English, and Dutch. Framed with images of the two Presidents of the United
States and informative plaques. James Madison (1751-1836), the fourth President
of the United States (1809-1817), rendered enormous service to his country
even before attaining that office. He is often referred to as "the Father of the
Constitution" due to his influential voice at the Constitutional Convention
and strong advocacy for the document through his work on The Federalist
Papers. As leader of the 1st Congress, he was the chief framer of the Bill of
Rights. He was Secretary of State under President Jefferson (1801-1809) and an
original organizer of the Democratic-Republican Party, progenitor of the
Democratic Party. James Monroe (1758-1831) succeeded Madison as
President, serving previously in a few federal government posts. From October
1814 to February 1815, he was both Secretary of War and Secretary of State.
As President for two terms, his foreign policy stance against foreign intervention
in newly independent countries of the Americas became known as the Monroe
Doctrine. At the end of his tenure, the opposition Federalist Party dissolved and
the Democratic-Republican Party split in two. Simon Theus and William
Crouch were both South Carolina state officials who represented the state in
this agreement. Regular wear and folds. Dime-sized holes along crease in
Spanish-language copy. Frame chipped at corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
