JAMES MADISON and ROBERT SMITH. Partly Printed DS: "James Madison" as President and "R Smith" as Secretary of State, 1p, 15¼x8½. On vellum. Washington, 1809 March 27. Grant of a quarter lot of land to "John Brownson, assignee of William Wells of Fort Wayne...directed to be sold at Cincinnati by the act of Congress, entitled 'An act providing for the sale of the Lands of the United States in the Territory north west of the Ohio, and above the mouth of Kentucky river,' and of the acts amendatory of the same...." The land was obtained by the United States as a result of the 1794 Treaty of Greenville which "guaranteed that the American settlement in Northwest Territory was secure from Indian attack as far west as a line that met the Ohio River at a point opposite the mouth of the Kentucky river". The act was passed two years later.ROBERT SMITH served as Madison's Secretary of State from 1809-1811. Lightly shaded and creased, touching signatures. Folds do not touch signatures. Nicked right edge. Lightly foxed touching some text. Full, 3-inch paper seal.
