JAMES MADISON and WILLIAM EUSTIS. Partly Printed DS: "James Madison" as Presidentand "W Eustis" as Secretary of War, 1p, 15x17½. On vellum. Washington, 1811 March 9.Appointment of Alexander J. Williams as "Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers in the service of the United States...he is to observe and follow such Orders and Directions from time to time as he shall receive from me or the future President of the United States of America or the General or other superior Officers set over him according to the Rules and Discipline of War...." On February 25, 1811, Secretary of War Eustis sent to President Madison the recommendation that "Alexander J. Williams, a Cadet at the Military Academy...be appointed Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers". On February 27th, President Madison forwarded Williams' appointment to the U.S. Senate. On June 30, 1812, just 12 days after the U.S. declared war against England, Second Lieutenant Alexander J. Williams was promoted to First Lieutenant and, on March 13, 1813, he was promoted to Captain, Second Regiment of Artillery. Signatures light but legible. Folds do not touch signatures. Lightly creased. Lightly soiled. Lightly stained, particularly at the upper blank margin.
