Naval Appointment Signed: "James Madison" as President and "W Jones" as Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 12½x8¼. On vellum. Appointment of George Davis as "a sailing Master in the Navy of the United States". A sailing Master ranked between a Midshipman and a Lieutenant. JONES had refused the post of Secretary of the Navy in 1801 when offered it by President Jefferson, preferring to remain in Congress (1801-1803). With the War of 1812 raging, he accepted President MADISON's appointment and served from January 12, 1813 to December 2, 1814. From 1816-1819, Jones was President of the Bank of the United States. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "Jo" in Jones and "Ja" in James. Lightly rippled and soiled. Otherwisel, fine condition.
