Ship's papers for the brig Regent of New York, signed in 1811 by president Madison and by Smith as Secretary of State
Whaling ships papers signed "James Madison" as President, "RSmith" as Secretary of State and "David Gelston Collector". 1 page, 10½x14¾ vellum with 3-inch paper Great Seal of the United States affixed in lower left corner. New York, New York, April 6, 1811. In full: "Suffer the Brig Regent of New York, Curtis Blakeman master or commander of the burthen of One hundred eighty two & 70/95 or thereabouts mounted with no guns navigated with Ten men to Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance seizure or molestation the said Brig appearing by good testimony to belong to one or more of the Citizens of the United States and to him or them only." Brigs were sailing ships with two masts and square sails. The rear sail is the mainsail and has a small fore-and-aft sail to improve maneuverabillity. Brigs were developed during the 17th century but saw their heyday in the 19th century. They were fast and maneuverable and were used as both military ships with 10 to 18 guns and merchant ships. Since the Regent was unarmed, it's probably safe to conclude that she was a merchant ship. Brigs were also bigger than schooners, with tonnages up to a hefty 480 tons, making the Regent a relatively small example of the type. They also required more crew for their large riggings. For this reason, brigs were replaced with schooners, and then steam ships, during the 19th century. Scalloped at top edge. Lightly toned, stained, soiled and creased. Right and bottom edge are irregular. Document has been folded vertically twice and horizontally twice. Otherwise in fine condition.
