President Monroe signs a land grant from 1820 for 160 acres in the Territory of Ohio.
Partly Printed DS: "James Monroe" as President, 1p, 13¾x8¾. On vellum. Washington, 1820 September 13. Countersigned: "Josiah Meigs" as Commissioner of the General Land Office. Grant of 160 acres in the Territory of Ohio to Samuel Stilwell of Edwards County, Illinois "having deposited in the General Land Office, a Certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Vincennes" On May 6, 1812, Congress passed "An Act to provide for designating, surveying and granting the Military Bounty Lands". By this act, land "fit for cultivation…and to which the Indian title is extinguished, not exceeding in the whole six millions of acres", were to be surveyed in the territories of Michigan, Illinois and Louisiana and set aside for non-commissioned officers and soldiers. Five additional acts relating to these land grants were passed from 1812-1818. Soiled, shaded at folds. Vertical fold touches "J" in Josiah. Lightly creased. Several nail head-size holes touch some words of text. Fine 2-inch diameter seal. Encapsulated.
