JAMES MONROE and JOHN QUINCY ADAMS. Partly Printed DS: "James Monroe" as President and "John Quincy Adams" as Secretary of State, 1p, 10½x13¾. On vellum. Signed in Washington but issued out of New York, 1821 June 22. Countersigned: "Jonathan Thompson/Collector" as Collector of Customs of the port of New York. Ship's paper for "the Brig Shepherdys of New Haven, Peter Stores master or commander of the burden of One hundred forty one 42/95 tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns navigated with Eight men...." No American ships could sail the open seas without this properly authorized passport. JOHN QUINCY ADAMS was MONROE's Secretary of State from 1817-1825 when he became President. Jonathan Thompson (1773-1846) was collector of direct taxes and internal revenue for the state of New York during the War of 1812, later serving as Collector of Customs of the port of New York from 1821-1829. At the time of his death he was President of the Bank of the Manhattan Company. Scalloped edge at top. Heavily wrinkled and creased touching signatures. ¼ to ½-inch nicks at blank left edge. Tackhead-size hole touches 1 word, nailhead-size holes in blank areas. Pinhead size holes touch some text. "Thompson" light but legible.
