In full: "In answer to the enquiry in your letter of the 14th instant I have to inform you that the residence of the Hon. James M. Porter is at Easton, Pennsylvania." PORTER had been Tyler's Secretary of War from 1843-1844. DAVIS, Pierce's Secretary of War (1853-1857), represented Mississippi in the House (1845-1846) and the Senate (1847-1851, 1857-1861), leaving the U.S. Senate after his state seceded. He was the only President of the Confederate States of America (1861-1865). Folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
