In full: "In reply to your letter of the 26th ultimo asking for copies of certain reports, maps and plans in relation to the enlargement of the harbor at Chicago, Illinois, I have the honor to enclose you a report of the Colonel of Topographical Engineers with such of the documents you desire as can be furnished by this Department and explaining where the residue may be obtained." Democrat HESTOR L. STEVENS represented Michigan in Congress from 1853-1855. Democrat JEFFERSON DAVIS was Pierce's Secretary of War from 1853-1857. He represented Mississippi in the U.S. Senate from 1847-1851 and 1857-1861, when he withdrew with other secessionist Senators. Davis served as President of the Confederate States of America from 1861-1865. Professionally repaired on verso. Creased. Browned left edge. Light glue stains from verso lightly show through. Repaired 1-inch tear at lower right blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
