JOHN F. KENNEDY Doodles drawn by the President as he reflected upon the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare Unsigned Doodles, 8½x13 lined yellow legal sheet. On November 23, 2004, the Archives of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library made available a collection of newly declassified material consisting of approximately 50 doodles (handwritten notes, reminders and jottings) primarily in President Kennedy's handwriting, made between February 1961 and October 1963. Among the doodles on the sheet offered here are sails (possibly of his sailboat Victura which frequently appear in his doodles) and two boxes with "H.E.W." written in them. The Department of Health, Education and Welfare had been created by Congress on April 11, 1953, just eight years before Kennedy's Presidential inauguration. John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), a decorated US Navy veteran of World War II, represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives (1947-1953) and Senate (1953-1960). In 1957, he was named to the prestigious Foreign Relations Committee. During his first term as U.S. Senator, Kennedy co-wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning Profiles in Courage while recovering from back surgery. The book discusses eight times in U.S. history where a U.S. Senator stood up for what he thought was right, no matter what his party or the public had to say. Kennedy went on to become the nation's 35th President. Sadly, his tenure in the Oval Office was cut short by his infamous assassination in Dallas Texas, on November 22, 1963, subject to numerous conspiracy theories in the decades since. Note in pencil from unknown hand at bottom of page. Lightly creased. Lightly soiled at lower margin.
