JOHN F. KENNEDY
This metal tie bar depicts the PT-109 boat last commandeered by John F. Kennedy. Extremely rare!
Ephemera Unsigned: a 1¾ inch-long depiction of the motor torpedo boat PT-109 that was last commanded by then-Lieutenant, junior grade officer John F. Kennedy in the Pacific Theater of WWII. The PT-109 was wrecked by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri when the huge battleship ran over the 80 foot long boat. Kennedy is credited with the survival of eleven of the thirteen crewmembers (including himself). This story of survival made Kennedy a war hero and contributed to his positive image when he ran for President of the United States. This item in particular was a gift from the President himself to a chef when the President vacationed at Martha's Vineyard. John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), a decorated US Navy veteran of World War II, represented Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives (1947-1953) and Senate (since 1953) when he declared his Presidential candidacy in 1960. Kennedy went on to become the nation's 35th President. Sadly, his tenure in the Oval Office was cut short by the infamous assassination in Dallas Texas, on November 22, 1963, subject to numerous conspiracy theories in the decades since. Fine condition.
