John F. Kennedy sends a typed letter of regret that he did not get to see his friends.
Typed Letter Signed: "Jack" as Congressman, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1947 March 26. To William Kelly, East Boston, a member of his staff. In full: "This is to acknowledge your letter of March 20th. I am awfully sorry that I didn't get the chance to see you and the rest of the Kelly family last week-end. But I am sure all of you will forgive me this time. I certainly hope that on account if it I don't lose that standing invitation to visit the Kellys at any time. In reference to James Parks of 122 Sumner Street, Apt. 394, East Boston, I am writing to the Boston manager of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, asking that Parks be reinstated. I am advising Mr. Parks directly of my action. I am very glad that the radio will be of some help to the East Boston Branch of the Library, and as you probably know by now, I had a letter which I wrote to the Committee inserted in the Record on March 20th. Apropos of the Record, I am having your name placed today on my mailing list, and you should start getting it in a short time. In regard to your possible retirement, I thought I would like to have a little further word from you on exactly what should be the approach to James Michael on the matter, If you will let me know just what you think would be best, I shall be most happy to contact him. It is always nice to hear from you, Billy, and I hope that I will be getting over to see your family the next time I am in Boston. Ted and Billy sends their best. Cordially yours," William F. Kelly was an aide to Congressman Kennedy. At the age of 28, John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) entered politics, involving most of the members of his family in his campaign to win the Democratic nomination for Congress in Massachusetts' Eleventh District. After beating out nine other candidates in the primary, he easily defeated the Republican nominee in the general election and he would go on to serve in the House 1947-1952, when JFK was elected to the U.S. Senate. Known for his accessibility to his constituents, Congressman Kennedy supported most of President Truman's "Fair Deal" program, although he occasionally attacked the President's foreign policy. 29-year-old John F. Kennedy wrote this letter just two months into his first term in Congress. Lightly creased. Paper clip rust stains at upper left.
