JOHN F. KENNEDY
John F. Kennedy sends a typed letter about the housing bill S.866.
Typed Letter Signed: "John" as Congressman, 1p, 8x10¼. Washington, 1947 June 18. To William Kelly, East Boston. In full: "Dear Billy: This will follow up my letter to you of June 17th relative to your desire to secure information on the housing situation. I just received a question-and-answer pamphlet on the housing bill, S.866, from the National Public Housing Conference, and believe you might find it of some use in writing your report on housing. Therefore, I am enclosing herewith a copy of same." Copy not enclosed. William Kelly was a member of Kennedy's staff. The housing bill referred to by JFK, S.866, was the Taft-Ellender-Wagner Bill. It was first passed by the Senate in 1944, but it always died in committee in the House. The bill concerned clearing big city slums and helping to erect low-rent housing. It was sponsored in the House by Congressmen Kennedy, FDR, Jr. and others. Opposed by organizations such as the American Legion, it never became law. 2 file holes at top margin. 2 faint nail head-size stains at blank right margin. Fine condition.
