JOHN TYLER. ANS: "J.T." as 10th U.S. President on
verso of ALS to him: "E. Daggett/PM", 1p, 7¾x9¾. No
place or date but the letter is docketed "Milledgeville
Ga/27 Jan 1844". Postmaster Daggett's letter: "Your letter of
the 20th inst is before me. I have searched in vain to find the letter of Mr.
Abell to which you allude. It will give me much pleasure in assisting your
friend Mr. Abell in any way not inconsistent with the duties of this office when
he will make it known to me." On verso, Daggett addressed his letter to:
"To/Honble John Tyler,/President U. States/Washington City,/D.C."
Postmarked "MILLEDGEVILLE, GA, JAN. 27". There are two notes, probably by the
presidential secretary who read Daggett's letter: "ansd & asked to
write again/& send order. 19 Feb" and "wrote again asking/if letter
of 19 reached him/18 Apl 1844". President Tyler was finally shown this
letter and writes: "How is this? I never/wrote any such/letter-" Possibly, a friend of Abell, or even Abell himself, wrote a
letter from Tyler knowing Abell would have a better chance at employment if the
President showed interest. The verso, an address leaf, is lightly soiled. 2 tape
stains, and ½x½-inch tear from opening of wax seal. Remnants also present. Left
edge of Daggett's letter shows paper loss not touching text. Folds, 1 touches
the "D" in Daggett.
