Autograph Letter Signed: "Jose M Gomez" in iron gall ink. 10x8. Fully Translated in English: "Santa Clara, July 24, 1899. Mr. Modesto Morales Diaz. Habana. My dear friend: I received your letter from the 22 and as a reply to it I tell you that your recommended individual will be welcome. When there is the need to forgive to all those many ones who combated us, to all those many ones who forgot their tasks and to the ones who were indifferent: it is necessary not to deny the pardon to the ones who did something for Cuba, and that only abandoned us in a moment of straying or moral dejection. Nature has made us similar in the physical aspect but not in the energies. We develop in a same environment but we do not get the same character. For instance, Judas who sold Christ, Saint Peter who denied him and then accepts to know him and happily go to his own sacrifice. Gomez served as a General during the Cuban War of Independence, then as a Governor of his native region of Las Villas, popularizing his eventual role in national politics. His presidency, however, was marred by many accusations and evidence of corruption, incurring many major scandals and he was never reelected; after losing to President Alfredo Zayas in 1920 in what was most likely an unfair election, Gomez traveled to the United States to appeal to U.S. President Harding and Congress to intervene in the unfair election, but was unsuccessful.
