LYNDON JOHNSON and LADY BIRD JOHNSON
The President signs, the First Lady inscribes and signs, a 14x11 color photo of the Presidential couple hosting Australia's Prime Minister at the White House.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Lyndon Johnson", "To Melvin Carter, with our deep appreciation -/Lady Bird Johnson". Color, 14x11 overall, image 11½x8 (one surface). Shown with Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt and Mrs. Holt, and Vice President Hubert Humphrey and Muriel Humphrey. Featured entertainers at the state dinner are shown on the stage behind them. LYNDON JOHNSON, the 36th President (1963-1969), and LADY BIRD JOHNSON had been married for 39 years and 66 days when he died in 1973. The Johnsons had two daughters, Lynda Bird and Luci Baines. When Mrs. Johnson died on July 11, 2007 at age 94, she had lived longer than any other First Lady except Bess Truman, who died at 97. Prime Minister Holt, a strong supporter of the Vietnam War, visited Washington in July 1966. He had just increased the Australian troop presence in Vietnam, and gave speeches in Washington praising President Johnson and his policies, one speech ending with the phrase, "all the way with LBJ." Holt would die in an apparent swimming accident in December 1967; his body was never found. Fine condition.
