LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON
Signed 10x13 photo of Johnson as Senate Majority Leader, inscribed to a member of his staff
Inscribed photo signed "To Sally Spears/with best wishes/and warm regards/Lyndon B Johnson". Also signed "30/30"on verso in unknown hand.B/w, 10¼x13¼. Thisphotowas presented to Sally Spears during Johnson's term as Senate Majority Leader (1955-1961), when Spears worked for him as a receptionist and typist. The man shown with Johnson is William Knowland (1908-1974) who represented California in the U.S. Senate from 1945-1959. Knowland, who served as Republican Senate Majority Leader (1953-1955) and Minority Leader (1955-1959), had previously served in the California State Assembly (1933-1935) and State Senate (1935-1939). JOHNSON (1908-1973, born in Stonewall, Texas), the 36th President of the U.S. (1963-1969), had served as U.S. Representative from Texas (1937-1949), U.S. Senator from Texas (1949-1961 -- Senate Majority Whip, 1951-1953; Minority Leader, 1953-1955; Majority Leader, 1955-1961) and JFK's Vice President (1961-1963). When President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, LBJ was sworn in as President aboard Air Force One. In 1964, he was elected for a full four-year term. He signed the Civil Rights Act into law that year, an act that was part of his "Great Society" package of social programs that included Medicaid and Medicare. But Johnson bore the brunt of opposition to the Vietnam War, and, because of it, did not seek reelection in 1968. Lightly toned and creased, otherwise in fine condition.
