Shown with Harry Truman in this framed photo, LBJ inscribes and signs it to the Secret Service agent who later drove the limo bearing President Ford through a red light and into a collision.
Photograph inscribed in calligraphy and signed: "To Andy Hutch/With appreciation," "Lyndon B. Johnson". B/w, 11x14 overall, image 7¼x11, enclosed in gold colored wooden frame to a size of 12½x16. Johnson has signed after a calligraphic inscription. LYNDON B. JOHNSON (1908-1973), who was a U.S. Senator from Texas from 1949 until his resignation upon being elected John F. Kennedy's Vice President in 1960, was Minority Whip (1951-1953), Minority Leader (1953-1955) and Majority Leader (1955-1960). He had previously been a U.S. Congressman from the state from 1937-1949. After serving as JFK's Vice President from 1961-1963, Johnson succeeded the assassinated Chief Executive as 36th U.S. President (1963-1969). He is pictured with the 33rd President, Harry Truman (1884-1972), apparently arriving at an event. Andrew Hutch (d. 1991), to whom the photo is inscribed, was a secret service agent. Although there is really no real connection - Johnson was two years dead - LBJ's "appreciation" to Hutch sounds ironic in light of later incident involving Hutch and the 41st President, Gerald Ford (1913-2006). Hutch was driving the Presidential limousine after a fund-raising dinner in Hartford, Connecticut (October 1975). Assuming that all intersections had been blocked by local police, Hutch drove the limo through a red light, resulting in a collision with another car. Ford was uninjured, but a Republican state official riding in the limo broke his finger. Frame lightly pitted. Photo in fine condition. Not framed in the Gallery of History style.
