LYNDON B. JOHNSON
Signed photo, inscribed to an influential Washington lobbyist, framed in the Gallery of History style to 16½x19½
Photograph inscribed and signed: "with best regards to Charles Patrick Clark -/Lyndon Johnson". B/w, 7½x9¾ overall, image 5¾x7½ (one surface). LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON (1908-1973), the 36th President of the U.S. (1963-1969), had served as U.S. Representative from Texas (1937-1949), U.S. Senator from Texas (1949-1961 -- Senate Majority Whip, 1951-1953; Minority Leader, 1953-1955; Majority Leader, 1955-1961) and JFK's Vice President (1961-1963). When President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, LBJ was sworn in as President aboard Air Force One. In 1964, he was elected for a full four-year term, but did not seek reelection in 1968. Charles Patrick Clark was Associate Chief Counsel of the War Investigating Committee, chaired by then Senator Harry Truman, whose investigation of profiteering in the defense industry (beginning in 1942) earned Truman fame (and a spot as FDR's running mate in 1944). Later, Clark became a powerful Washington lobbyist. Clark gained headlines in 1950 by punching syndicated columnist Drew Pearson for a story Pearson had written about Clark's lobbying efforts on behalf of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco. Light ink smudge above the "nd" of Lyndon. ¼-inch tear at lower left edge, two pinhead-size nicks at lower left and upper right margins. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 16½x19½.
