30-year-old Congressman helps a constituent stock his waters with fish.
Early Typed Letter Signed:
"Lyndon B. Johnson" as Congressman, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, 1939 January 31. To Woods J. Oliver, San Marcos, Texas. In full: "As soon as your letter of January the twenty-third arrived I contacted the Bureau of Fisheries in the Department of Commerce and requested an application blank for you. It has just come, I have endorsed it, and enclose it herewith. I appreciate your making it possible for me to do this small favor for you and I want you always to feel that when there is some service I can perform for you, all you have to do is let me know about it. With kindest regards and good wishes." Horizontal fold touches top of "L" in "Lyndon". Light paper clip impression in upper left corner, else fine condition. Also included are a blank "Application for Fish", 4p, 8x10½, with a light stamped signature of Johnson, and a letter of instructions, 2p, 8x10½, from the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Fisheries, with signature in type: "Frank T. Bell", as Commissioner. Both have paper clip impressions in the upper left margin. Application has two paper clip rust stains in upper right corner on verso, affecting two lines of typed text. Fish to stock lakes, ponds or streams were supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries if a U.S. Senator or Representative endorsed the request. On April 10, 1937, Johnson had won a special election for a seat in the House of Representatives to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Democratic Texas Congressman James P. Buchanan. LBJ, who had an influential friend in Democratic majority leader Sam Rayburn, was reelected five times, serving until his election to the U.S. Senate in 1948. Two items.
