Early Typed Letter
Signed: "Lyndon B. Johnson" as
Congressman, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, 1939 January
31. To Woods J. Oliver, San Marcos, Texas. In full: "As soon as
your letter of January the twenty-third arrived I contacted the Bureau of
Fisheries in the Department of Commerce and requested an application blank for
you. It has just come, I have endorsed it, and enclose it herewith. I appreciate
your making it possible for me to do this small favor for you and I want you
always to feel that when there is some service I can perform for you, all you
have to do is let me know about it. With kindest regards and good wishes."
Horizontal fold touches top of "L" in "Lyndon". Light paper clip impression in
upper left corner, else fine condition. Also included are a blank
"Application for Fish", 4p, 8x10½, with a light stamped signature of
Johnson, and a letter of instructions, 2p, 8x10½, from the Department of
Commerce, Bureau of Fisheries, with signature in type: "Frank T. Bell",
as Commissioner. Both have paper clip impressions in the upper left margin.
Application has two paper clip rust stains in upper right corner on verso,
affecting two lines of typed text. Fish to stock lakes, ponds or streams were
supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries if a U.S. Senator or Representative
endorsed the request. On April 10, 1937, Johnson had won a special
election for a seat in the House of Representatives to fill a vacancy caused
by the death of Democratic Texas Congressman James P. Buchanan. LBJ, who had
an influential friend in Democratic majority leader Sam Rayburn, was reelected
five times, serving until his election to the U.S. Senate in 1948. Two
