Typed Letter Signed: "Lyndon B. Johnson", 1p, 8x10½. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C., 1939 January 31. To Mr. Earl Vaughan Riley, San Marcos, Texas. In full: "As soon as your letter of January the twenty-third arrived I contacted the Bureau of Fisheries in the Department of Commerce and requested an application blank for you. It has just come, I have endorsed it, and enclose it herewith. [not present] I appreciate your making it possible for me to do this small favor for you and I want you always to feel that when there is some service I can perform for you, all you have to do is let me know about it. With kind regards and good wishes, I am, Sincerely yours," Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908-1973), the 36th President of the U.S. (1963-1969), had served as U.S. Representative from Texas (1937-1949), U.S. Senator from Texas (1949-1961 -- Senate Majority Whip, 1951-1953; Minority Leader, 1953-1955; Majority Leader, 1955-1961) and JFK's Vice President (1961-1963). When President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, LBJ was sworn in as President aboard Air Force One. In 1964, he was elected for a full four-year term, but did not seek reelection in 1968. Fold creases not near signature. Chipped at lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
