Price: $750.00
LYNDON B. JOHNSON
Congressman LBJ sends a letter about the progress of H. R.
4269.
Typed Letter Signed: "Lyndon", 1p, 8x10½. House of
Representatives, Committee on Naval Affairs, Washington, D.C., 1944 March
14. To Mr. W. E. Long, Manager, Chamber of Commerce, Austin, Texas. In
full: "I have just received and carefully read your nice letter of March
11th concerning H. R. 4269, which was introduced by Mr. Overton Brooks a friend
of mine of Shreveport, Louisiana. Yesterday afternoon I got together with him
and had a long talk with him about his bill. Later I talked to the Chairman of
the Military Affairs Committee about the possibility of starting hearings on
this measure and trying to get some legislation considered. Brooks told me this
morning that hearings would begin this afternoon on the measure he has
introduced, but even Brooks is not sure that his bill is the best proposal that
can be offered to renedy [sic] the situation. All of us are very
sympathetic to some action being taken and I am going to follow it very closely
and do everything I can to be helpful. In the meantime, I wish you would spread
this word along among our friends down there and let me know if there is
anything further I can do. You may be sure of my continued interest.
Sincerely," Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908-1973), the 36th President
of the U.S. (1963-1969), had served as U.S. Representative from Texas

1951-1953; Minority Leader, 1953-1955; Majority Leader, 1955-1961) and JFK's
Vice President (1961-1963). When President Kennedy was assassinated on
November 22, 1963, LBJ was sworn in as President aboard Air Force

reelection in 1968. Pencil notes in unidentified hand in blank areas. Staple
