LYNDON B. JOHNSON
From his ranch, the former President sends thanks to friends in
Austin.
Typed Letter Signed: "LBJ", 1p, 7x8¾. Austin, Texas, 1970
March 16. To Honorable Will Odom, Austin, Texas. On his personal stationery,
embossed in gold. In full: "Meanwhile - back at the ranch - it's
mighty nice. I, too, look forward more than ever to spring this year and to
friendships I can count on...like the kind you and Liz have always given us. We
are grateful to you for many things, including those thoughtful notes you both
took the time to write." Fine condition. With original envelope,
7¼x4, bearing printed frank, addressed to Mrs. Odom. Lightly soiled, else
fine. After becoming U.S. Senator in 1949, Johnson and his wife, Lady Bird,
bought what is now the LBJ Ranch on the Pedernales River in Texas.
Although he retired to the ranch on January 20, 1969, after the inauguration
of his successor, Richard Nixon, the ex-President traveled frequently. In
July 1969, for example, at the invitation of President Nixon, he traveled to the
Kennedy Space Center in Florida to witness the launch of Apollo 11, which
fulfilled the commitment of JFK and later LBJ to have an American walk on the
moon by the end of the 1960s. The ex-President died on his ranch on January 22,
1973. Two items.
