Lyndon B. Johnson send a typed letter explaining what has been done so far on behalf of a constituent.
Typed Letter Signed: "Lyndon B. Johnson" as Congressman, 1p, 8x10½. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C., 1948 April 27. To Mrs. Jewel Ogene Warren, Austin, Texas. In full: "This morning I got in touch with Mr. Simms of the Veterans Administration and inquired as to why you had not received a settlement on your claim that had been adjudicated in your favor. The Veterans Administration made a search into your files, and it seems that Mrs. Myrtle Warren is choosing to contest the decision and has engaged the services of a lawyer in Temple, Texas, for the purpose of filing a lawsuit. The VA has set a policy of holding up on all claims as long as the claim is being contested, and until such time as this claim is out of doubt, they must hold up paying the settlement. At this point the VA has not heard anything other than the intention on the part of Mrs. Warren to file suit. It is unknown whether or not the suit has actually been filed. I trust that this is the explanation that you needed as to why you have not been paid. If there is any further information that you need, please let me hear from you. Sincerely," A member of the House since 1937, Johnson was a member of the Armed Services Committee. Later in 1948, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, representing Texas until 1961, when he was sworn in as JFK's Vice President. Folds, vertical fold touches "L". Lightly stained at lower margin, near signature.
