LYNDON B. JOHNSON
Lyndon B. Johnson sends a typed letter about the congressman who held the seat before him.
Typed Letter Signed: "Lyndon B. Johnson" as Congressman, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, 1943 July 6. On his personal Congressional stationery to Mr. J.M. Heffington, Lexington, Texas. In full: "I understand that you were an admirer of my predecessor, the late, great James P. Buchanan, and I thought you might like to have a copy of the Memorial Services held in his honor by the House of Representatives. I am mailing you a copy today. Living up to the standard of excellence he set has been something toward which I have constantly strived. I hope my efforts have in a measure been successful. The job will be much easier if you will occasionally write and counsel with me on your problems and those of our other friends down that way." LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON (1908-1973) was elected to Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Democrat James Paul Buchanan. Buchanan was first elected to Congress in 1913 when Albert S. Burleson resigned after being appointed Postmaster General by President Wilson. Buchanan was reelected 12 times, serving until his death in 1937. Like his predecessor, Johnson was also reelected several times, serving six terms before leaving the House after being elected to the Senate in 1948. Apparently, he lived up to his commitment to excellence: in three of the elections (1938, 1940 and 1942) for the House seat; he ran unopposed. Creased at left blank margin, two small soil marks, one just touching the end flourish of the second "n" in the last name. Overall, fine appearance.
