Typed Letter Signed: "Lyndon B. Johnson" as Congressman, 1p, 8x10½. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C., 1941 August 12. To Tom Serur, Austin, Texas. In full: "Wish I could bring you some better news than is contained in this letter from Mr. Kellam. However you know that I'm ready to hit the ball for you at any time you say the word. I shall be awaiting your suggestions as to action I can take in your behalf. With all good wishes, I am Sincerely your friend." Johnson was State Director of the National Youth Administration of Texas (1935-1937) when he was elected to the House in 1937 in a special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James P. Buchanan. LBJ was reelected in 1938 and 1940. On June 28, 1941, he lost a special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of U.S. Senator Andrew Jackson Houston, son of Sam Houston. When war was declared, Congressman Johnson obtained the consent of the House for a leave of absence to enter the service in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served from December 9, 1941 to July 27, 1942. Commissioned Lieutenant Commander, he was the first member of Congress to enter active duty in WWII. Horizontal fold touches top flourishes of signature. Rust staple stain at upper left, 2 nail-head-size stains at right blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
