MARTIN VAN BUREN
As President, he refers a request for restoration of rank to his Secretary of the Navy
Autograph Endorsement signed as President: "Referred to Jas Paulding/Secy of the Navy/MVB", 1 page, 7¾x9¾. Written on verso of a letter from Clement Barnett in New York, dated 1839 February 27. Barnett forwards a letter from his former commander, a Commodore Mayo [Item not included.], which he trusts "will be sufficient under the peculiar circumstances to induce you to restore me my Warrant." MARTIN VAN BUREN (1782-1862), a shrewd politician known as "The Little Magician" and "Old Kinderhook" (the origin of the term "OK") had been a U.S. Senator(1821-1828) and Governor of New York (1829). He was Jackson's Secretary of State until April 1831, when he was appointed Minister to Great Britain. Jackson quarreled bitterly with John C. Calhoun, Vice President in his first term, and replaced him with Van Buren in his second (1833-1837). Van Buren was himself elected President in 1836, but lost his bid for re-election, in large measure because of a severe economic slump which many historians attribute to Jackson's policies. Van Buren would run for President again as candidate of the Free Soil Party in 1848. Here Van Buren declines to intervene directly in a naval disciplinary matter, referring the matter to his Cabinet Secretary. Multiple mailing folds. Notches at left and right edge at folds. Toned. Lightly creased. Corners worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
